The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant that reduces the upfront cost of an air source heat pump. The current grant is £7,500, and it rises to £9,000 for installations completed from July 2026. Homes that currently run on oil or LPG can access the same £9,000 uplift between July 2026 and March 2027.

What changed in April 2026: the EPC requirement and the related loft and cavity insulation rule were removed. You no longer need to reach a specific energy efficiency rating before you can claim. If your home has gas, oil, or LPG heating and you are replacing it with a standalone heat pump, you will almost certainly qualify.

Who it covers:

Who it does not cover: gas boilers. The BUS grant applies to heat pumps (and some biomass), not to like-for-like gas boiler replacements.

The scheme runs until 2030. Rules are reviewed annually, so for the definitive eligibility criteria always check the official Boiler Upgrade Scheme page on GOV.UK. The figures above were verified in June 2026.

ECO4 and other help

ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation, phase 4) is a separate scheme that funds insulation and in some cases heating upgrades for households on qualifying benefits or with low incomes. It is funded by energy suppliers, not the government grant pot that covers BUS.

ECO4 was originally due to close on 31 March 2026. The government extended it by nine months to 31 December 2026, specifically to allow energy suppliers to complete existing projects in an orderly way. Most of the available funding has already been allocated. New applications may still be possible depending on your energy supplier’s remaining targets, but capacity is limited.

A successor scheme (sometimes referred to as ECO5) is expected under the government’s Warm Homes Plan, but has not yet been confirmed or opened. If you think you may qualify through benefits or income criteria, check your eligibility at GOV.UK and speak to your energy supplier directly, as the position changes frequently. We will update this page when a successor scheme is confirmed.

Typical ECO4 qualifying benefits include: Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, and Income Support. An energy supplier survey is required to assess the property.

How BASI handles the grant

We are MCS-certified, which is the accreditation your installer must hold for the BUS grant to be valid. Here is what that means in practice:

  1. Survey first, then a fixed price. One of our heating engineers (not a salesman) visits to assess whether a heat pump is genuinely right for your home. If it is not, we will tell you. If a gas boiler is the honest answer for your property, we will say so.
  2. Grant applied before you pay. We submit the Ofgem application on your behalf and deduct the grant from your invoice. You see the net figure, you do not pay up front and claim it back.
  3. Fixed price, no surprises. The quote you receive after the survey is the price. Gas Safe registered, Worcester Bosch and Vaillant accredited, 30 years serving West and North Yorkshire. No sub-contractors.
  4. MCS certificate issued. You receive the MCS installation certificate, which is the document Ofgem requires to release the grant and which is needed for resale and mortgage purposes.

Our Gas Safe registration number is 623525. You can verify any Gas Safe registered business at gassaferegister.co.uk.

Questions

Things people ask. The honest answers.

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

The grant is £7,500 right now for an air source heat pump. It rises to £9,000 for installations completed from July 2026. Homes currently heated by oil or LPG can access the same £9,000 uplift between July 2026 and March 2027. The grant is applied by your installer as a discount on the invoice, so you pay the net figure rather than claiming money back.

Am I eligible for the heat pump grant?

If you own the property (or are a private landlord), it is an existing building in England or Wales, and you are replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a standalone air source or ground source heat pump, you will almost certainly qualify. The installer must be MCS-certified. As of April 2026, the EPC rating and insulation requirements were removed, so eligibility is simpler than it used to be.

Do I pay for the heat pump and claim the grant back?

No. Your MCS-certified installer, BASI in this case, submits the Ofgem application and deducts the grant from your invoice before you pay. You see the net price on the quote and pay that figure. There is no money to claim back and no waiting for a rebate.

Does my home need insulation or a certain EPC rating to qualify?

No. The EPC requirement and the related loft and cavity insulation rule were removed in April 2026. You do not need to reach a specific energy efficiency rating, and there is no mandatory insulation work required before the grant can be applied. Your installer still needs to be MCS-certified and complete an installation assessment.

How long does the grant application take?

BASI handles the full Ofgem application on your behalf. The grant voucher is typically issued within a few weeks of application. The grant is deducted from your invoice so you do not need to wait for funds to arrive before the work is complete. Your MCS installation certificate is issued at the end of the job.

Is there ever a grant toward a gas boiler?

No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies to heat pumps and in certain cases biomass boilers, not to gas boiler replacements. If a gas boiler is the right answer for your home we will tell you that honestly, and quote a fixed price for a new Worcester Bosch or Vaillant boiler. Gas boiler installation starts from £1,895 at BASI.
