With concern about energy costs, here are ten tips for keeping your home warm on a budget, beyond the more expensive options of double glazing and loft insulation.

Keeping a house warm in winter on a budget

1. Clear your radiators

Keeping radiators free from clutter and uncovered means you feel the full effect of the heating and the room warms up faster.

2. Cover bare floorboards

Floors account for around 10% of heat loss if uninsulated. A rug keeps your feet warm and makes a room feel less cold.

3. Shut that door

Closing doors keeps out draughts and keeps warmth where you need it most.

4. Put a shelf above radiators

A shelf above a radiator, especially with high ceilings, helps warmth circulate rather than rising straight up.

5. Thick curtains

Thick curtains help prevent heat escaping. You can line existing curtains, and a curtain over a door adds another layer of protection.

6. Chimney balloons

An unused open fireplace loses a lot of heat. For around £20 a chimney balloon inflates inside the chimney to shut out cold air.

7. Draught excluder

A draught excluder stops heat escaping under doors, especially in older buildings. You can even make your own.

8. Can’t afford double glazing?

A window film imitates a similar effect, and bubble wrap can work too, though it looks a bit silly.

9. Make the most of daylight

Keep curtains open during daylight for natural light and warmth, and close them when it gets dark.

10. Change your bedding

Thicker bedsheets, a flannel duvet cover and pillowcases make your bed warmer, and an old fashioned hot water bottle never fails.
