7 energy saving quick wins to save you money

As central heating goes on for the season, monthly bills typically rise. Several practical strategies can minimise energy use and reduce gas costs.
1. Banish those draughts
Draught excluders are an affordable way to prevent heat loss. Soft furnishings such as curtains and carpets provide extra insulation around windows and floors.
2. Clear your radiators
Positioning furniture away from radiators improves heat circulation around the room, making heating more efficient.
3. Tin foil for your radiators
Reflective foil behind radiators directs warmth back into the room. This is particularly useful for radiators on external walls where heat is lost.
4. Secondary film glazing
Plastic window film applied to the inside of windows is an affordable insulation improvement, with a house-sized pack typically costing £10 to £15.
5. Get smart with your controls
A smart or room thermostat helps you better manage your home’s temperature so you are not heating when you do not need to.
6. Check for insulation funding
At the time of writing, government grants supported loft, cavity and solid wall insulation. Check current schemes before planning work.
7. Care for your boiler
An annual service keeps your system performing well, as accumulated dust and debris reduce efficiency over the year.
