Mythbusting: plastic film on your windows vs double glazing
For homes without double glazing, plastic insulation film serves as a practical, budget-friendly substitute. Those in rented properties or wanting to preserve original windows can benefit from this temporary heat retention method.
The film works by creating an air pocket between the window glass and the room air, insulating the window and minimising heat loss. When applied to the window frame rather than directly to the glass, the film can be stretched until nearly invisible.
While significantly cheaper than double glazing, this approach is considerably less effective and must be removed when opening windows in warmer months, making it strictly temporary. Consider it only when double glazing is not feasible. The film is readily available at most DIY retailers and can be self-installed by following the instructions or online tutorials.
Verdict: plausible. It helps, but it is no substitute for proper double glazing.
