How to use less hot water and save on your bills

We have become accustomed to instant hot water whenever we need it, so usage gradually creeps up. Hot water accounts for around a quarter of gas bills, so reducing everyday consumption can yield noticeable savings.
1. Time your showers
Showers are a major source of hot water consumption, particularly in larger households. Setting a timer and targeting around five minutes can significantly reduce usage.
2. Avoid baths where possible
Baths use considerably more hot water than a brief shower. When bathing, use water conservatively.
3. Lower the hot water temperature on your boiler
Modern boilers produce extremely hot water, but heating to your actual usage temperature is more economical. Adjusting the boiler to around 60 to 65 degrees saves money and prevents wasted heat.
4. Fit flow regulators
Installing flow regulator fixtures on powerful showers and taps limits the flow speed, reducing consumption and preventing waste while waiting for hot water.
5. Use the kettle for big jobs
For tasks needing large quantities of hot water, such as floor cleaning, boil a kettle and mix with a little cold water. This is more energy efficient than heating via your gas supply.
If reducing consumption has not lowered your gas bills, a professional boiler service may identify system inefficiencies. For current pricing, see our boiler service page.
