What's the cost of a boiler service?

The short answer: a full boiler service with BASI costs £80, fixed, and takes about an hour. That includes the safety checks, the flue gas analysis and a written service record for your warranty, with no call-out fee and nothing added on the day. Prices elsewhere vary with the engineer and the area, so whatever the headline figure, ask what it includes before you book. A cheap number sometimes buys less than an hour’s proper work, no flue gas analysis, or a “service” that is really a visual once-over.
During the service, your engineer will
- Check everything is working efficiently
- Thoroughly clean your system
- Assess the performance of your boiler
- Test the flue for safe emissions
- Carry out gas pressure tests to check for leaks
You should not be charged extra for the callout or the cleaning. Where possible, agree the cost in advance rather than leaving it until the work is done, to avoid an expensive hourly fee.
Will there be any additional charges?
The only additional costs that could crop up are for replacement parts or repairs. Most boilers have a lifespan of at least ten years, but only with the correct maintenance, so you will need new parts and system flushes at some point. Your engineer will explain any extra work and outline the costs and timeframes so you can decide whether to proceed.
Will I save money by skipping annual services?
There is no legal requirement to keep your boiler serviced, but neglecting it is likely to cost you in repair work later. Services keep the system efficient and uncover small problems before they become bigger issues, reducing the chance of a complete breakdown.
Will missing a service affect my warranty?
Yes, it can. Skipping a boiler service can void your warranty or insurance plan. You may think your boiler is covered, but if you have missed an annual service, that may no longer be the case. Many cover plans include an annual service, so you do not pay on top of your policy.
